The TCL158x family of devices do not normally requireany external current limiting circuitry such as protectiondiodes, frequently used with older LDO regulators. A diodeis internally present between the output and input which iscapable of handling short-duration surge currents of up to100A. This capability typically ensures safe operation ex-cept for the case where output capacitance is exceedinglylarge (>1000ccF) and theinputis suddenly shorted to ground.This situation can produce excessive reverse current in thedevice - enough to cause damage. An external high currentdiode should be used as shown in Figure 2. The ADJ pin does not normally need protection diodeseither. It can handle +7V without any performance degrada-tion ordevice damage. Current atthis pin is internally limitedby a series resistor so the bypass capacitors do not presentany danger. Of course, exceeding 7V differential betweenany two pins will cause catastrophic junction breakdownsand possible damage to the device.
